Call for Nominations: Book Review Editor at Surveillance & Society

We are pleased to announce that the journal Surveillance & Society is currently inviting self-nominations for Book Review Editor. As with all editorial positions, the Book Review Editor will serve simultaneously on the Board of the Surveillance Studies Network (SSN) and the editorial board of the journal. The term for this position will begin January 2026.

About Surveillance & Society:

Established in 2002, Surveillance & Society is the premier journal of the transdisciplinary field of surveillance studies. The journal has provided 20 years of independent, open-access, peer-reviewed publishing and has set a model for how free-to-access electronic journals could achieve international reputations and impressive impact factors without charging publication or access fees. The journal is published on a quarterly basis under the auspices of SSN, which also runs a biennial surveillance studies conference, awards prizes for academic and artistic work, runs a junior-scholar mentorship program, and many other activities. The elected Book Review Editor would also serve on the SSN board and assist the organization as needed.

Position Description:

The Book Review Editor serves for a three-year term. Tasks involve identifying and requesting appropriate surveillance studies books from publishers, using social media and other outlets to locate qualified reviewers, sending books to reviewers, ensuring the receipt of reviews in a timely fashion, and ensuring that the final manuscripts conform to the journal’s style guide. Given that Surveillance & Society is an international journal, efforts should also be made to obtain regional diversity with the selection of reviewers. The Book Review Editor will also be expected to participate in Board discussions, including virtual participation in our Annual General Meeting usually held in January. The anticipated start date for this term is January 1, 2026. [Appointment is subject to final approval by the Editors-in-Chief and editorial board.]

Because the journal is run by a non-profit charity (SSN) and maintained through the volunteer work of dedicated scholars, there is, unfortunately, no financial compensation for this position. That said, the new Book Review Editor would be joining an energetic team of like-minded individuals who assist each other—and the field—in countless ways, building a rewarding scholarly community and ensuring the sustainability of inclusive publications like Surveillance & Society.

Eligibility Criteria:

Qualified candidates should have a PhD or JD. Candidates should currently hold a tenure-track or tenured academic position, although we will also consider candidates with comparable appointments at non-profit research-based organizations. Qualified candidates should also be active contributors to the field of surveillance studies. Finally, while not required, preference will be given to candidates who have previous editing experience and are well-established and well-networked in their fields.

Process:

To be considered for this position, please submit to Torin Monahan <torin.monahan@unc.edu> the following materials:

-Your current CV.

-A self-nomination letter (1 page maximum) describing your interests in and qualifications for the position. Please state your previous editing experience, previous involvement with the journal, and previousparticipation in SSN, if applicable.

The deadline for receipt of self-nominations is December 1, 2025.

While we welcome self-nominations from all interested and eligible individuals, we are particularly interested in self-nominations from scholars from underrepresented regions and under-represented demographic groups.
