Do you want to organise themed events, actively participate at SSN conferences, and exchange regularly with researchers working on similar surveillance topics, methods or theories?
The Network and Editorial Board (NEB) of the Surveillance Studies Network (SSN) call for official Working Groups hereafter referred to as “WGs”.
▪ WGs are defined as
1. a collective of [at least 7] SSN members, aligned to a broad theme in surveillance studies, a disciplinary area, or a regular SSN conference track.
2. Examples might include the Arts WG, Surveillance in the Majority World WG, Media and Communication WG, Law and Justice WG, Surveillance Theory WG, etc.
▪ WGs will be self-constituted and self-organising, but the board of directors in consultation with the Network and Editorial Board (NEB) will develop guidelines and a model for titles, rules and procedures for WGs.
▪ WGs will select a committee of 3 to 5 members, who will be responsible for:
1. managing the WG;
2. organising and delivering a track or a thematic focus at the biennial SSN conference;
3. organising at least one other virtual or in-person research event, workshop, etc., in the two years between SSN conferences;
4. selecting one member who will report to the NEB.
▪ WG representatives must produce a simple annual report and accounts to the NEB, based on a template provided by the board of directors.
▪ All SSN members have the right to join and represent WGs, but no SSN member may be a member of more than two WGs and a committee member of, or representative of, more than one WG.
▪ Individuals joining or renewing their membership with SSN can choose to sign up for up to two listed working groups.
▪ Members can form a new WG by sending an email to the board at contact@surveillance-studies.net, expressing their objectives (300 words), possible contributions to the SSN (conference, workshop, reading group, etc.), and initial members.
▪ WGs may apply for grants, awards etc, with the official support of the SSN, after approval from the board of directors. To aid compliance with UK charity law, all WG funds will be held centrally in the SSN bank account(s) and managed by the SSN Treasurer.
